House On a Hill

Dear Future Homeowners,

We moved to West Orange from Northern Virginia with our three young children uncertain of what to expect. New Jersey has quite the colorful reputation thanks to reality television and we were anxious about living in the mecca of pizza and bagels, diners, endless highways and terrible accents. Our house hunt was chaotic to say the least, driving hundreds of miles, back and forth in a frantic search for a house to call home. The search delivered one disappointment after the next- a lack of houses (suitable for our family of five) for sale topped the list of frustrations.

We were starting to lose our faith in the process, feeling like we would never find that perfect fit. But on the very last day of our visit, right before we were to return to Virginia, our realtor suggested we look at a home outside of our established search area because, “what the heck, it could be the one!” It’s no surprise that she was right, it WAS the one and before we knew it Walker Road was home.

We were naive to all West Orange had to offer and have spent the last five years growing to love this town with each new relationship, each unique experience and yes, every new bagel shop that opens. The town has a rich and beautiful cultural diversity that is expressed in many ways that include local festivals, art exhibits, music, restaurants and a vibrant (seasonal) farmers market. Walker Road is a microcosm of the larger environment, our neighbors varied in their race, ethnicity, religion and talents. We have celebrated Passover and Hanukkah across the street, we have broke bread alongside neighbors fasting for Ramadan, we have mourned alongside neighbors yearning for racial justice, and we have cried and laughed together as we share the hardships of raising children. Our own children have had the privilege to learn how to sew, taught by a professional seamstress across the street. They have explored the art of sculpture and pottery, firing their precious works in a kiln snuggled in a coveted “she-shed” down the hill.

They have had sneakers signed by a local (and current) NBA superstar at the foot of our stairway. And we have all gathered around an outdoor fire, toasting marshmallows, drinking local craft beer and singing alongside Broadway performers who also call this neighborhood home. The unique view that your home on the hill has will be coveted by every visitor that crosses your doorway. We have spent many nights on our porch gazing out over the spectacular
New York City skyline, marveling over our peaceful neighborhood, so close to the hub and action of the city that never sleeps. The July 4th holiday brings front row seats to fireworks across the five boroughs, Newark and Jersey City – what a view, indeed! But there is nothing quite like the morning sunrise over the Manhattan skyline – pink, purple, orange and red in all its gorgeous brilliance. We will certainly miss our hot cup of coffee on the patio, neighbors walking their dogs, children rushing off to school at Gregory Elementary, each starting their day with a
wave and a smile!

The recently renovated backyard has been the scene of many celebrations. Friends and family gathered together playing yard games, shooting hoops and jumping on the trampoline. Two separate outside spaces has allowed for plenty of room and plenty of privacy, depending on what is preferred. And in the summer months you can count on a yard filled with fireflies that light up the night, a nostalgic memory from most childhoods now shared with the next generation.

A weekend can effortlessly be filled with activities for the entire family. A quick walk down to Gregory Elementary allows for soccer or lacrosse in grass fields, bike riding and playground fun. Hop into the car and Turtleback Zoo is within minutes, an adorably quaint yet impressive local zoo complete with lions, sea turtles and penguins. The zoo hosts a popular summer camp as well as movie nights under the stars. Around the corner is the Essex County Regatta Park or as the kids call it, the Pirate Park. The fenced in playground allows for hours of fun for a variety of ages and the paved path around the reservoir is great for a leisurely stroll or a timed mile – whatever you’re up for! The Rock Spring Golf Club is a local favorite and although we don’t golf, I can promise you that the 19th hole is worth a visit in the spring/summer/fall months. The food and beverages are well done and the best part is the 15 minute walk home, 20 minutes if you meander through the golf course while the sun sets.

Your new home is also a central location for adventure, a launching pad to easily explore all this region has to offer. A quick, one hour drive will land you on the beautiful, sandy beaches of the Jersey Shore. Mountains are more your speed? The Hudson Valley/Catskill Mountains are within a one to two hour drive allowing for fun day trips. We love to hike Mt. Beacon in Beacon, NY and then dine at one of the many delicious restaurants in town. If you like to downhill ski, Belleayre Mountain is under two hours away, if you like to camp New Jersey offers endless possibilities- our favorite being Stokes State Park, and if you enjoy bike riding there are miles and miles of rail trails in both New Jersey and the Hudson Valley. Locally the town offers a family friendly town pool and numerous recreational team and individual activities for both children and adults.

We never expected to live in West Orange. And perhaps that is what has made the time here so special, our house found us and then we made it our home. The neighborhood welcomed us with open arms, absorbing us into its rhythms and routines and we are better for that. We hope that you too will find that sense of home here. Home is so much more than the walls that surround you but is also the experiences you have and the memories you make. Here’s to making memories – welcome home.
