Our Town

Only a 40 minute train ride to Manhattan, Millburn, New Jersey, is a prime location for commuters. But the area’s two nature reserves—Fox Hill and South Mountain—and local arboretum make it feel like you’re worlds away. Historic houses abound here, from 1870s Victorians to early 20th-century Craftsmen. Head to the charming, walkable downtown for some grub, a little window shopping, or a class at one of the many fitness studios. The affluent neighborhood of Short Hills is home to another great spot to spend an afternoon: the Mall at Short Hills, home to an Eataly, a big Indigo bookstore, and dozens of upscale stores.

Where to Eat in Millburn, New Jersey

  • When you’re really hungry: Millburn Deli. The O.G. location of this iconic lunch spot is beloved for its inventive, very shareable sandwiches. The Gobbler, a Thanksgiving-inspired, stuffing-topped creation, is a must try (don’t worry, it’s available year-round). 
  • When it’s freezing outside: Saigon Cafe. There’s no better way to warm up than with a steaming bowl of this Vietnamese restaurant’s phở, which was named best in the state by Yelp in 2023. 
  • For an after-school snack: Liv Breads. Stop by this bakery and cafe whenever for a flaky croissant or loaf of sourdough, but prime time is 3 p.m. to 4 p.m., when a slice of pizza and a cookie are just $5.
  • When you’re celebrating: Common Lot. You’ll have a view of the open kitchen from your table, where the chefs whip up seasonal dishes like hamachi with watermelon aguachile and pumpkin beignets with caviar.
  • When you’re catching up with a friend: Millburn Standard. At this elevated American eatery, the best seats in the house are at the extra-long bar. The cushy upholstery and high backs encourage sitting and gabbing awhile.

 

Where to Shop in Millburn, New Jersey

  • For a no-fail host gift: Paper Ribbon & Wrap. Show up with something from this store’s selection of scented candles, special-occasion tableware, and other little luxuries and you’re guaranteed to be invited back.
  • For your next book club pick: The Book House. There’s no better pairing than a page-turner and a warm beverage, and this indie bookstore sells both. Keep an eye out for monthly author events and children’s story hours.
  • For a wardrobe refresh: Bungalow. Fill your closet with chic staples from lesser-known brands without breaking the bank—most items at this women’s clothing boutique are under $100.

Where to Play in Millburn, New Jersey

  • When the kids need some fresh air: South Mountain Reservation Fairy Trail. Just a half-mile long, this wooded path across from the Millburn Public Library is perfect for little legs and big imaginations. Look closely and you’ll spot the telltale signs of fairy life (tiny doors, ladders, and even furniture!) nestled among the rocks and tree roots.
  • When you want an alternative to the playground: Genius Gems. There are 100,000 magnetic tiles and counting at this indoor playcenter, ready to be turned into anything your child can dream up. Psst: They host monthly “Date Night Drop Offs.” 
  • When you love a good show tune: Paper Mill Playhouse. Grab tickets to whatever musical is playing at this factory-turned-theater. You know you can’t go wrong when this is the place where Broadway hits like Newsies and The Great Gatsby got their start. 
  • When you’ve exhausted the park rotation: Greenwood Gardens. The next best thing to having a historic mansion of your own is visiting this private estate–turned–public garden. Roam the 28 acres of Italianate gardens, wildflower meadows, and more on weekends May through November.

 

Events You Won’t Want to Miss in Millburn, New Jersey

Insider Tip: Rocktoberfest is an annual music festival held in Taylor Park on a Saturday. It’s an incredible 10-hour extravaganza of musical acts, shopping, food vendors, and a beer and wine garden. —Cari, 20-year Millburn resident
