Dear Future Homeowner,
We have been so fortunate to call 8 Kendal Avenue our home for the last 17 years. Our children, now in college, have grown up here and have made lifelong friends in the neighborhood. We’ve spent countless, lovely evenings on the porch and in our backyard around the firepit and have hosted friends and family regularly. We can’t imagine a more welcoming and nurturing place to set down roots. Though it is bittersweet to leave, it’s comforting to know that another family will get to experience life in Kendal Valley.
The extended Maplewood/South Orange community is extraordinarily diverse vibrant one, and Kendal Avenue in particular has its own unique qualities that have made living here so very special for us. The street, for example, is a popular destination for Halloween – both ends are blocked off for full pedestrian access – and we’d like to think there is no better place than our porch to give out candy to the throng of trick or treaters both young and young at heart. The Kendal Avenue Block Party is an annual, family-friendly celebration that brings friends and neighbors together, both long-time residents and new arrivals.
East Cedar Lane, part of the extended Kendal Ave community with which we share a corner, hosts its own block party and is home to families that have become valued friends and neighbors. East Cedar is also a stone’s throw to the shops on Ridgewood Road, a mini-main street that boasts eclectic shopping like Valley Vintage, West Village Clothing, Milk Money, Renaissance Consignment, SOMA Sounds Records, and Yellow Rose Vegan Café and Bakery.
And of course there is downtown Maplewood and South Orange Villages, both walkable from 8 Kendal. This includes Memorial Park, which hosts the annual live music festival Maplewoodstock and 4th of July fireworks; a gorgeous, newly-renovated free library; myriad casual and fine dining restaurants and coffee shops, hair and nail salons, farmer’s markets, clothing and gift shops. The towns’ train stations too are in walking distance and accessible by jitney, and less than an hour’s commute to New York City.
Perhaps what we have treasured above all living at 8 Kendal is the comfort and quiet simplicity, the breathtaking native flora and fauna, the opportunity to stroll through tucked away-parks and to hike in beautiful South Mountain Reservation, falling asleep to the sound of crickets and waking up to birdsong, all respite from life’s stresses. Our children have forged lasting friendships in the street’s shared backyards, in schools and playgrounds, and as they’ve grown, they’ve enjoyed having the independence to walk to town for a slice of pizza at Roman Gourmet or a cone at Village Ice Cream Parlour. When we moved here almost 2 decades ago, we hoped for, but could not have imagined the quality of life that this home has afforded us.
We thought we’d offer a few words from the now young adults who grew up here:
Sawyer, age 21:
This is gonna sound sappy, but this was THE perfect place to grow up. There’s such a huge sense of community, I felt really safe playing with the neighborhood kids, and to this day it feels like everyone cares about each other and wants to include one another. I love that everything is walkable, and no matter where you go in town, you see someone you know.
Bruno, age 18:
Most of my favorite memories were from when I was young, so going to the parks nearby and playing in the yards was always fun. Meeting friends like E. and B., and the kids on East Cedar was very exciting. Our house is also very cozy. South Orange and Maplewood village are very close along with the schools which is nice. Halloween was a big deal. Trick-or-treating on Kendal and the surrounding streets was great because I got to explore the neighborhood and got a lot of candy, too.
May you enjoy the blessings and happiness that life at 8 Kendal has provided us. Wishing you ease and peace as you navigate the path to homeownership!
