Dear Future Homeowners,

Five short years ago we moved into 22 Berkshire in Maplewood after being relocated from Canada to the US. Having spent a brief time in the city we were thrilled to have this quiet refuge that offered space for our son to run and play, and the space for us to spread out and not be on-top of each other. We have loved our time in Maplewood and cherish our warm evenings enjoying ice cream in town, snow sledding in the park and eating pizza on the patio of Arturo’s.

For the past five years this home has hosted birthdays, holidays, sleep overs, movie nights; and countless BBQs. We’ve loved having the outdoor dining space which we’ve used spring, summer and fall; and also the functional woodburning stove which we’ve regularly used through the cold winters. Especially with the transition to working and learning from home, the generously sized bedrooms have allowed for a space to retreat at the end of the day. We’ve loved having the basement space for watching late night TV at full volume without disturbing the sleepers upstairs; and also being able to use the space for early morning virtual spin classes before the break of dawn. The attic space has also been wonderful and has been exceptionally versatile serving as an additional adhoc bedroom, play space; and more recently as an epic office. With the layout of the home we’ve been able to have multiple guests over for extended stays with everyone remaining comfortable.

When we purchased the home in 2016, our main decision driver was having the option to walk to either South Orange or Maplewood Station and be whisked into the city in 35 minutes. The house is nearly equal distance to both of the Maplewood or South Orange train stations and the walk to the station is nearly entirely downhill – which is great in the mornings when you’re running late. For the days/evenings when the walk (back uphill) is too much we’ve frequently conceded and taken the jitney which picks up from the station and drops on Parker, on the other side of the block.

While our purchase was initially driven by the ease of commute, property features and access to great schools; what we’ll miss most about our home at 22 Berkshire is the intangible quality of the neighborhood and the community that we’re leaving. As newcomers to the US, we were immediately put at ease by our amazing neighbors and the family oriented nature of the neighborhood. On Berkshire alone, there is nearly a 1:1 ratio of children to houses on the street which has made for long evenings of play, bike riding and silliness. Having been away for less than a month, we already miss the block parties, cupcake socials, and random run-ins on the street; all the things that make the Berkshire neighborhood special.

Regrettably work once again has taken us back on the road; and as such, with deep reluctance we are forced to part ways with our Maplewood home. We hope you love the home and community as much as we have; and wish you and your family many years of love, laughter, and happiness at 22 Berkshire Road.
